10 Resolutions for 2004
- Get a credit card (after doing my due diligence). Having a credit card establishes credit in your name even if you never use it. Having a good credit history will help you with borrowing and obtaining loans.
- Pay off my credit card debt every month. Credit card debt is bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. Bad.
- Drink tap water when I go out to eat. 2 drinks a week x $2 each = $4 a week x 52 wks/yr = $208 a year [Which equals three 16 gallon kegs for you and your closest 500 friends.]
- Not go to the grocery store hungry. We've all done it before. We've gone to the grocery store hungry and then somehow ended up at home with $70 worth of shrimp, onion flavored pork rinds and chili cheese flavored peanut butter in our cupboards. Just don't do it.
- Invest. A 20 yr. old investing $1,000 in a mutual fund with an average return of 12% will have over $35,000 by age 50. This versus a 30 yr. old investing the same amount will have just over $10,000 by age 50.
- Sell my old clothes and books to second hand stores. Most stores will sell your clothes with 40% consignment. That means that for every $10 they make you sell $4.
- Save my change. $1 a day x 365 days a year = $365.00 [Which equals round trip airfare from LA to Cancun.]
- Not drive my car so much. Use free or discounted public transportation or your feet/bike for stress-free transportation OR spend lots of money on gas to pay for your half hour search to find a parking spot that is a twenty minute hike away from your destination.
- Start a savings account. Nobody wants to live paycheck to paycheck. Try to put a little money away each month into a savings account so that when those squeaky breaks start to do more than just squeak you have the resources to do something about it.
- Turn down my thermostat. Break out the slippers, sweatshirts, blankets and firewood. Create a cozy love nest and save on money.
