Military Dudes & Smart Moves
Q. I just turned 18 and someone mentioned I needed to register for the draft. What is it? Do I have to register?
A. The Selective Service System is an independent federal agency that exists in case the U.S. military needs emergency manpower and needs to reinstate a "draft." Here is how this affects you:
- Registering for Selective Service is not volunteering for military service. It is acknowledging you are eligible for service should the U.S. military need you.
- Almost all men, citizens and aliens ages 18 to 25, must register for the draft. Women are not currently required to register.
- If you don't register, you could be fined up to $250,000, serve up to five years in prison, and become ineligible for Federal Student Aid and some government jobs.
- There are many opportunities to register, including online and at a U.S. Post Office. For more information, visit sss.gov.
Q. I want to move to a new city, but I don't even know where to start.
A. Moving to a new city is intimidating, but here's what you can do to make sure you're ready:
- Check out the cost of living calculator at money.cnn.com/tools.
- Include the cost of moving and potential deposits on a new place.
- Check monster.com and careerbuilder.com.
- Search local or regional job-listing websites.
- Try using craigslist.com or apartments.com.
- Consider short term, furnished or month-to-month agreements if you're not sure how your new city will fit.
- Look for internships that provide housing.
- Check meetup.com to find local organizations and begin networking.
