Ninety-nine cents a song--we're all used to paying that price. But, what if you could get music for free without going all late-1990s Napster on everyone and just jacking it? Well here's how to get musically independent without selling out your wallet.
Downloads:
- amiestreet.com--This independent music website has over 1 million songs. They start out free or cheap but go up in price as they
get more popular, eventually reaching 98 cents per song. If you get in before a song or artist becomes really popular, then you get free (or cheap) music. - spiralfrog.com--This site provides music and videos from artists ranging from Amy Winehouse to Tupac free of charge. Sign up for a free membership, but make sure you're running Windows XP or Vista and have a current version of Windows Media Player.
- amazon.com--Some music selections are free. Also check out their killer deals on full albums.
Streaming:
- pandora.com-- Create a free account, choose your favorite bands, Quickmix your music, and start listening to endless, streaming, free tunes. Pandora will play your chosen artists and artists similar to them, so it's a great way to find out about new music. Pretty much everyone at brass listens to Pandora nonstop.
- mixturtle.com--Just plug in an artist's name and start listening to free streaming music. You can also create a custom playlist.
- slacker.com--Listen to streaming music from pre-made stations and genres. Or, sign up for free and create custom stations.
Physical Albums:
- swaptree.com--Join for free and start trading music and a bunch of other stuff. It's like one big online swap meet.
Don't Forget: If you have iTunes, don't forget to download the Free Single of the Week.
