It's that time of year to celebrate. No, it's not Christmas or St. Patrick's Day; it is, once again, my birthday. To get you all in the birthday spirit I thought I'd share some of the most expensive birthdays to date, obviously in preparation for my 23rd extravaganza.
So here goes:
Ex-American Idol meanie Simon Cowell threw himself a lavish 50th birthday party in 2009--and by lavish I mean over $1.5 million dollars worth of lavish. The party included giant pictures of Cowell, waiters wearing Simon Cowell masks, and A-list guests like Ryan Seacrest and Naomi Campbell.
Speaking of…
For her 36th birthday in 2006, Supermodel Campbell (her unofficial title) threw a three-day, $1.8 million bash at a seven-star hotel in Dubai. At around $600,000 per day on all-white, hip-hop, and Brazilian Samba themed days, this event was one for the record books.
In 2002, Texas investment billionaire David Bonderman threw his 60th b-day bash at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. The $7 million event featured performances by John Mellencamp and The Rolling Stones. Unfortunately the event ended by 4:30 pm--the performers and the birthday boy couldn't miss Jell-O and Matlock. (Just kidding. I bet it was awesome. But seriously, those geezers are old.)
The Sultan of Brunei threw quite the bash for his 50th in 2006. He reportedly shelled out $27.2 million, invited the people of Brunei, and treated them to a concert featuring Michael Jackson. Do you think when the concert was over, the Sultan told them all to "Beat It"? Ok that joke was "Bad." (I'll stop with the Michael references now.)
Finally, the most exquisite party is the 23rd b-day party for brass staffer, Chris. Price tag: roughly $50 (or 5,000 pennies) for food and decorations we've been using for the last 20 years, so basically just food. I may not have Michael Jackson performing for me--and I think we all know why--but money and extravagance aren't the only important things; family and friends are what really count on birthdays. (Pause for the aww moment… aww.) And I know that despite the "Happy Birthday" sign that’s literally 20 years old, my b-day is going to be awesome.
Have fun blowing out your own candles--when your b-day comes around, of course.
