Between December 21st and December 24th of this year the U.S. Postal Service will deliver approximately 16.6 billion items. A majority will be processed today, December 16th, as it's predicted to be the busiest shipping day of the year.

You’re probably asking yourself what the process was for deciding on this particular date. Did they use a complicated mathematical formula? Read too far into a Mayan calendar?

Naw. It seems assumptions have been made based on our nothing-if-not-lazy nature. Today is the last day you can mail a package through USPS and ensure it arrives at its destination before December 24th.

Granted, you could pay extra for quicker shipping options, but that would defeat the purpose of getting inexpensive gifts.

Never fear. As you may have guessed, my finely-tuned ability to procrastinate has also left me with gifts unpurchased and packages unsent. My plan is to mail the gift late with a note stating I forgot Christmas was in December. (This only works if you send a good gift.)

UPDATE: Apparently December 17th is Free Shipping Day. www.freeshippingday.com lists merchants that offer free shipping with delivery by December 24th.
