Samantha Garvey, a high school senior from Long Island, New York, is a devoted student, a passionate scientist, and a recent semifinalist in the Intel Science talent search--a prestigious contest for high schoolers. She is also homeless.

Her story has garnered a wave of support: AT&T donated a $50,000 college scholarship, Suffolk county helped locate affordable public housing for her family, and her local Congressman invited her to attend Tuesday's State of the Union address.

This week Intel announced its top 40 finalists, and Samantha didn't make the list. But contest winner or not, her determination and positive outlook are definitely inspiring.
