When applying for a job, it can be hard to stand apart from hundreds of other applicants--especially if you're confined to a one page résumé. So, the next time you're job hunting, consider producing a video resume.

Video résumés are a great way to showcase your unique personality, allowing employers to put a face to your education and employment history.

At its best, a video résumé can showcase what skills you can bring to a company and allow you to put your best foot forward before participating in an interview.

At its worst, your video could be the next “Impossible is Nothing.”

Some tips to consider before putting your professional career on the line over YouTube:

  • Keep it short--Attention spans shrink by the second. Keep in mind that a video résumé is a supplement to the written one. Keep it around one to three minutes.
  • Know your audience--Prospective employers may not have the same sense of humor as your friends.
  • Stay professional--Even though you’re producing this video on your own time, dress as if you were being interviewed. Also, refrain from swearing and don't include props that are illegal or inappropriate (not a joke, this actually happens).

Video résumé don't have to be Hollywood productions--they should focus on substance rather than style. Having a solid traditional résumé is still the best way to get a job. But going the extra mile and making a video résumé could be a way to make that paper résumé stand out from the rest.
