What started as a good idea--a 100% copper 1 cent piece--in 1792 is now a muddled one that's resulted in the U.S. spending $134 million per year to make eight billion pennies that aren't worth the copper-colored metal they're printed on. (Oh yeah, pennies are now just 5% copper and 95% zinc.)
